“A NEW BRITISH SUPERSTAR IN THE MAKING” – Chris Hawkins, BBC 6 Music
“A GROUNDBREAKING NEW ARTIST” – Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1
“HER MUSIC IS RAW AND HER WRITING IS VULNERABLE, SHE HAS AN AMAZING VISION AND GROWS WITH EVERY RELEASE. FOR A BLACK ALTERNATIVE ARTIST IN THE UK IT CAN BE VERY HARD NOT TO SLIP BETWEEN THE GAPS WHICH IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE ARTISTS LIKE AMAROUN A PLATFORM AND SUPPORT NOT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE GREAT, BUT ALSO TO BROADEN THE BREADTH OF WHAT BLACK MUSIC CAN BE, SO THAT ANOTHER YOUNG BLACK BRITISH QUEER WOMAN CAN SEE & HEAR HERSELF BEING REFLECTED.” –– Jamz Supernova, BBC Radio 1Xtra
My work explores the black queer experience, alongside themes of belonging, loneliness, oppression, communion & self expression; a journey into my history, memories, religion, identity, repression & ultimately my breaking free, created for all those like me, existing at the intersections of their heritage & identity –– I embark on this project to connect with them, to build community & to encourage self acceptance in the face of all forms of rejection and oppression.
